Local 1179 Marches Across Brooklyn Bridge

On October 28th 2009, Officers and Members of ATU Local 1179 marched with their brothers and sisters from TWU Local 100, ATU Local 1056, UFT and others to protest the MTA challenge to binding arbitration and to let our voices be heard about our own contract.
Thanks to all who participated.

About the ATU and Local 1179

The Amalgamated Transit Union is the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1892, the ATU today is comprised of 160,000 members in 280 local unions spread across 46 states and nine provinces.

ATU Local 1179 was chartered on January 17, 1938 and today represents the active and  retired members of the former Green Bus Lines which was part of the inter-model public transit system of the City of New York. Green Bus Lines has since been taken over by the MTA BUS Company.

By all legal and proper means, it is the mission of ATU Local 1179 to follow the Preamble, Objectives, Laws, and Principles as set down by the ATU International Union. Our International has set forth many great objectives for its local unions to follow in our mission to secure our rights, advance our interests as workers, and build an organization where all the working members of our craft can participate. To build a forum that encourages the exchange of ideas on problems, which our welfare and prosperity depends. Establish order and harmony, and to encourage the principal and practice of negotiation and arbitration in the settlement of all differences between labor and management.
